NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A registered sex offender was sentenced on Oct. 18 after committing another sex-related crime involving children, within the same year of being released from his previous sentence, a release states.
49-year-old Theodore Cathers was sentenced on Oct. 18 to 10 years in prison for possession of child sexual abuse material.
According to court documents, on April 7, 2023, Cathers uploaded four files of the abuse material depicting prepubescent and pubescent children in sexually explicit behavior.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded a report of the uploaded material to the Virginia Beach Police Department.
On June 27, 2023, police obtained a search warrant for an online storage account belonging to Cathers and recovered approximately 2,900 files of the abuse. The material included images of pre-pubescent children and depictions of bondage and sadomasochism.
A “large portion of the files” included children mostly or completely naked engaged in sexually explicit acts.
Cathers is already a registered sex offender after having been convicted of two counts of taking indecent liberties with children under the age of 15 in 2012.
In 2012, Cathers was discovered naked in the bedroom of two children aged 11 and 7 years old. The 11-year-old informed law enforcement that Cathers came into their bedroom and got into her bed with her. A short time later, Cathers got into the 7-year-old’s bed and removed all his clothing. Cathers was convicted in 2013 and sentenced to 10 years in prison with 10 years suspended.
