PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 71-year-old man charged with murder in the shooting death of a woman in the Port Norfolk area of Portsmouth told police that the woman attacked him after he said he wouldn’t get money so she could buy drugs, court documents show.
According to police, the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Florida Avenue. That’s near the intersection of Bayview Boulevard by the Elizabeth River.
The woman, 37-year-old Crystal Jacobs, was found with a gunshot wound at the scene. She died before paramedics could get her to the hospital.
71-year-old Irving B. Wolff was also found by officers and arrested. He’s been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm, shooting in commission of a felony and reckless handling of a firearm.
On Monday night, Portsmouth police said Wolff had been released from jail on a $25,000 bond.
Court documents in the case show that Wolff told police that Jacobs asked him to withdraw money that night so she could buy drugs. He said he’d been drinking and refused to go. That’s when he said Jacobs became irate and attacked him, documents show. He then fatally shot her in the altercation.
This was the second fatal shooting in Hampton Roads on Sunday night. A man was fatally shot about 90 minutes prior in Norfolk.
