Person severely injured in fiery crash in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A multiple vehicle crash closed traffic and severely injured one man near Effingham Street in Portsmouth Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just before 12:30 p.m. near the 1700 block of Lincoln and Effingham Street.

An update from police Thursday said the investigation determined it was a two-vehicle crash. One vehicle sustained minor damage. The second vehicle hit a fire hydrant then became engulfed in flames. A person in that vehicle was severely injured and was taken to the hospital.

10 On Your Side is working to learn the status of the man injured in the incident.

Police say southbound lanes of traffic were closed past Southside, and westbound lanes of traffic were closed past Chestnut Street.

The area was blocked for some time due to the heavy police presence. Police asked drivers to avoid the area as they worked to clear the scene.

All lanes were reopened by 4:30 p.m., according to police.

The Strategic Traffic Unit is investigating the accident.
