PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a man died following a shooting in Portsmouth overnight.

According to Portsmouth police, officers were sent to the 600 block of Washington Street just before 1 a.m. Tuesday regarding reports of gunshots fired.

When they got to the scene, officers found 20-year-old Jamir Barnes, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

On December 5, officers responded to Bay Area Movers Inc., located on Victory Court, for a report of a stolen vehicle. Detectives believe the vehicle theft could be connected to this incident.

On January 10, investigators said they were still looking for a white Ford Transit Connect van with a missing back passenger hubcap. Investigators believe the white van may be associated with a locksmithing company.

Police are also attempting to identify an unknown suspect who was driving a stolen 2015 silver Jeep Cherokee. He’s described as a man who was wearing black pants with white writing on the sides, a “The North Face” hoodie and a white beanie.
