Suspects in Portsmouth home invasion caught on camera identified; still wanted

UPDATE: Online court documents show that Mitchell Boney Jr. was indicted on Feb. 2.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police have identified two suspects caught on camera during a home invasion in Portsmouth targeting elderly residents.

“I am actually pleased to report that we have secured warrants involved in that home invasion,” Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins tells 10 On Your Side. However, neither suspect is in custody yet.

Investigators have identified the suspects as 25-year-old Mitchell Boney Jr. and 22-year-old Tyree Demont Boney Jr. Both are wanted for armed burglary, use of a firearm, abduction, and conspiracy to commit a burglary.

According to police, Mitchell Boney Jr. drives an orange 2017 Dodge Charger with VA Tags UBS7788.

Police say the pair is wanted in connection with an incident that occurred Wednesday at a home in the 2600 block of Turnpike Road.

“I mean to be pushed into a closet against your will, or make you do anything. I think anyone would feel violated and helpless to defend themselves,” said Chief Jenkins.

A preliminary investigation revealed two armed suspects entered the home around 1:50 p.m. and ordered the two elderly residents to get inside of a linen closet at gunpoint.

The suspects then proceeded to steal a safe and a wallet. The entire home invasion takes 1:06 seconds

Police released surveillance camera footage that captured the crime unfolding inside the home. You can see one of the suspects pressing a firearm to the back of the female resident and ordering her not to speak.

“Get in the closet. I’m not [expletive] playing,” said one of the suspects to the elderly man sitting on the couch in what appears to be the living room section of the home.

Both suspects were holding firearms and pacing around the room as the victims hurried to go inside the closet. One of the victims had trouble walking and was using a walker.

Once the residents were inside the closet, the suspects started taking items from the home including what appeared to be cell phones.

Seconds later, one of the suspects appeared on camera carrying the safe.

“When the home invasions occur, they are generally known offenders to the victim, so we don’t have people wandering around kicking in people’s doors,” said Chief Jenkins. “We don’t know who gave them the information…I do not know at this time how that information was put out.”

The male victim confirmed to 10 on Your Side there were “tens of thousands of dollars” in the safe that belonged to someone staying with the victim and his wife.

The Chief also told us the person who owned the safe has been very helpful in connecting the dots who did this.
