Crash on I-264 in Portsmouth results in fatality

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police have released the name of the driver who died in a crash on I-264 in Portsmouth Monday morning.

The call for the crash came in around 6:40 a.m. Monday at mile marker 1.9 on I-264, near Greenwood Drive. Two vehicles were involved in the crash.

A preliminary investigation of the crash revealed that a 2004 Honda sedan was traveling eastbound on I-264 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It crossed over the grassy median, striking a dump truck that was traveling westbound on I-264. The impact of the crash caused the dump truck to run off the road and into the tree line.

The driver of the Honda, 25-year-old James Byron McRoy from Suffolk, died upon impact. The driver of the dump truck was transported with non life-threatening injuries.

No charges will be filed, according to state police.
