PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Three people, including a Portsmouth Police officer, suffered minor injuries following a chase and crash Friday in which an armed carjacker was captured and arrested, authorities said.

Portsmouth Police received a be-on-the-lookout announcement Thursday from the Hampton Police Department for a carjacking by a group of armed people on the 2600 block of Cunningham Drive in Hampton, not far from Interstate 64.

Around 9 a.m. Friday, police located the stolen vehicle on Airline Boulevard, about 25 miles south of the alleged carjacking. Police said that once the driver noticed the officers, he began to speed and eventually crashed into two vehicles that each had two people inside, also crashing into a police car.

Two victims were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other two rejected medical treatment, police said.

Police have yet to release the name of the person they arrested.

One witness who lives on Airline Boulevard says he saw the car speed down the road and then heard the crash.

“The car flew down this road, down the Airline Boulevard, and I saw the impact of the car smack the back end of the white-ish van and the black truck,” said witness Matthew Waymire.

He heard it all and ran to go check on everyone.

“I ran outside and checked on the truck,” Waymire said. “I couldn’t see too well in the truck, but I clearly saw like I still had a mom with the infant. So I was like, ‘Oh, wow, OK. So then I ran over to the van, and there were two guys in there.”

He said he saw one person get out of the car and take off down Kings Highway.

“We saw a dude run across the street, and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ And they were like, ‘Hey, he’s running this way, running this way,'” Waymire said.

He said that, as a new father, events like these happening in front of him make him nervous. Waymire said his partner saw them in their backyard.

“It’s kind of nuts,” Waymire said, “and it’s like, it’s just eye-opening, and it puts a lot of uneasiness to even go outside.”
