PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The appropriate sounds of summer filled the air at the London Oaks Apartment Complex in Portsmouth on Wednesday morning.
Youngsters, under supervision from professionals from the city’s recreation department, showed off their athletic skills on a small patch of grass outside the Community Center. Applause and children’s laughter punctuated each score boys and girls made during the games.
Other sounds of summer, all too familiar in London Oaks, put the neighborhood on edge the day before. The sirens of emergency vehicles rang loudly just before 5 p.m., after a 15-year-old was shot.
One might think with surveillance cameras mounted in several locations, this would be a safe place to raise a family. But in recent months, the bullets fly, day and night, and are indiscriminate.
Sylvia Jones’ three young grandchildren live in London Oaks. She has this message for the children in this community: “Just stay safe. Stay out of trouble. Hopefully when they go back to school, everything will be better. But I don’t know what to say. I don’t even know how these young people get guns. It’s terrible.”
Police have released few details about the shooting Tuesday evening, but several people in the community told WAVY News 10’s Regina Mobley at the scene that the 15-year-old was shot while inside the community laundry center. The teen is expected to recover.
Detectives are searching for two suspects in this case. Both are considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information about either of them, please contact Portsmouth Police at 757–393–8536 or the Crime Line at 1–888-LOCK-U-UP.
