UPDATE Sept. 29, 2021: The two remaining charges Jahquan Jones was facing were nolle prosequi, or withdrawn, during a hearing.


UPDATE Jan. 3, 2020: Charges of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony against Jahquan Shallah Jones were dropped in Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Nov. 6.

Jones was was arrested and directly indicted into Circuit Court Dec. 24, 2019. He is again charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm.

His next court date is Feb. 6.


PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead at an apartment complex in Portsmouth late Tuesday night.

Police were called to the 30 block of Pebble Point Court – at the Churchland Forest Apartments – around 11:30 p.m. where they found the body of Jamel Howell. Police say he had been shot to death.

19-year-old Jahquan Shallah Jones has been charged with 1st degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Howell’s death.

No other details have been released.

Family members told 10 On Your Side’s Kayla Gaskins Howell was a 31-year-old father of three children.

Police have planned a R.E.S.E.T. walk Thursday at 4 p.m. at the scene of the deadly incident.
