Police: 3 dead in shooting on Salisbury Way in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Three people were killed, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child, in a shooting on Salisbury Way in Hampton Monday evening, Police Chief Mark Talbot said.

During a Tuesday news conference, Talbot addressed the violence in the city, noting that nine people have died in seven shootings in the first month of 2023. Twenty people have been shot in those shootings, he said.

One man died at the scene Monday evening, and a woman who was eight months pregnant was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. That woman and her unborn child has since died, Talbot said.

The three who died include DeJonte’ Nash, 24, of Newport News, Destiny Layton, 25, of Newport News who was eight months pregnant and her unborn child, Talbot said.

Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

“Tragic and senseless crimes that represent a lot of pain for families,” Talbot said, referring to all of the city’s homicides in 2023, “a lot of pain for neighbors and friends, and a lot of pain for the city, and frankly, a lot of pain for this police division.

“We’re here to let our city know that we’re using this pain that they’re feeling and we’re feeling as motivation to bring safety and security back to this city. These aren’t random crimes. Our victims were targeted.”

The call came in at 9:43 p.m., according to Hampton Police, with officers responding to the scene on the 1st block of Salisbury way. Officers found one man dead at the scene, and the woman was taken to the hospital.

Police are releasing no further information at this time.
