Girl struck in hit-and-run while on way to Booker T. Washington High in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a 16-year-old girl was struck in a hit-and-run crash Monday morning while she was walking to school at Booker T. Washington High in Norfolk.

The girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk with life-threatening injuries. Police say the call for the crash at E. Virginia Beach Boulevard and Park Avenue came in around 7:10 a.m.

As of 4:40 p.m. Monday, Norfolk police said the girl is in critical but stable condition.

No other information about the crash is currently available, including a description of the suspect vehicle.

Police said school administrators have provided support for the child’s family and the Norfolk Public Schools crisis response team was at the school on Monday.

The roadway reopened just before 11 a.m. after police asked the public to avoid the area for their investigation.

“I just got scared and I was wondering if she was OK,” said Booker T. Washington High School senior Stephen Hutchings. “I saw a car pass her, and I saw a woman lying on the ground, and she was just lying there not moving at all, and some people had stopped, and blocked traffic and I called for help.”

Darlene Houston, who lives nearby, heard the teenager who was hit scream for help.

“It was a loud screaming and yelling sound like a young female voice saying ‘Help me, ah, ah, ah. I’m hurt,'” she recalled.

10 On Your Side asked several students leaving the school if they knew the girl who was hit — they all said now.

Hutchings said he was unable to determine the color of the car that hit the girl, and didn’t know what the driver looked like.

“No, unfortunately, it happened so quickly,” he said.

Everything happened so quickly — split seconds.

After the car sped off, Hutchings says school faculty responded in force.

“Faculty rushed out to make sure everything was OK, and then they watched the scene carefully,” he said.

Houston added that she felt worried as she stood on the corner watching.

“It makes me scared because I use a walker… I sit there in the window, and I see them running red lights all the time,” she said.
