NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A pedestrian from Newport News died after walking onto the interstate Tuesday morning on the Peninsula, police say.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened around 3:40 a.m. on eastbound I-64 west of the 261 exit in Newport News.

State Police confirmed the male pedestrian, 19-year-old Kevin Paniagua, was walking east on the interstate around the 260.5 mile marker when he was struck. The preliminary investigation showed that Paniagua walked into the traffic lane from the right shoulder and into the path of a Ford Econoline truck, police said.

The driver of the Ford wasn’t injured.

No charges have been filed at this time, and police said it’s unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor. All lanes on I-64 reopened at 6:34 a.m.
