SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — One juvenile girl has been injured after being shot by police during an altercation on Saturday, Dec. 30, in Suffolk, police said.
The girl’s mother, Carolyn Brown, said she was 15 years old.
The call came in around 11:45 a.m. for a report of a disturbance involving an individual with a weapon in the 6200 block of Oakglen Drive, police said.
Police said the girl was wielding two weapons, but did not release what those weapons were.
However, neighbors told 10 On Your Side she was holding a hammer and a knife. Carolyn said her daughter had just smashed her brother’s phone with a hammer, and was having mental health issues.
One neighbor declined to be on camera but said she offered to talk to the girl to help, saying she’s a teen behavioral specialist. However, she told 10 On Your Side an officer told her not to intervene.
Another neighbor declined to show his face or name, but said he had no idea the situation was serious when he first saw the police presence.
“I thought it was kids, I thought it was a dogfight actually. Then I’m thinking it was some adult stuff, but it wasn’t. And when I had seen it was kids, I thought it was innocent. I thought the cops could you know, break it up or something.”
He couldn’t believe what he heard next.
“But when I heard the shots, it got serious. So of course, I came to the door with my dog, and I saw the little girl on the floor.”
According to Suffolk police, they tried to deescalate the situation, but the girl approached an officer in a “threatening manner.” Another officer then pulled out a gun and shot her.
The number of times the gun was fired has not been released by police. The girl was transported to the hospital for her injuries.
“And then I’d seen the cop run to go do CPR or something and then after that the ambulance came,” the neighbor said.
Carolyn said her daughter had just finished over two and a half hours of surgery after sustaining several gunshot wounds.
She told 10 On Your Side she has a long road to recovery ahead.
The involved Suffolk police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal and administrative investigation, police said.
10 On Your Side received ring doorbell footage that displayed the moments before the shooting.
The sound reveals a girl’s voice screaming “let me go.” Then it appears to reveal an officer’s voice saying “I’ll just tase her.”
When asked if any officers attempted to or did tase her, a city spokesperson said that part of this incident is under investigation.
10 On Your Side is working to learn more details about this incident.
