NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The former Lambert’s Point Golf Course on the waterfront in Norfolk will have at least some space for the public going forward.
Norfolk City Manager Patrick Roberts shared the development during Monday’s Larchmont-Edgewater Civic League meeting, the Virginian-Pilot first reported. He said the space won’t see private redevelopment in the future, pointing to limitations due to its previous use as a landfill.
Most of the former golf course was taken over last January by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District for a new sustainable water initiative, though just over 15 acres remained under the city’s control.
The city confirmed the plans for the space also include some shared use with Old Dominion University’s golf team. ODU used to play at the site and still leases land at the site for the team’s clubhouse, the driving range and auxiliary spaces.
There are no concrete plans for ODU at the moment, but ODU spokesperson Amber Kennedy said: “Old Dominion University is committed to working with the city to find a solution that benefits our surrounding neighbors and our very successful student-athletes competing in mens’ and womens’ golf.”
This comes after months of work from the Lambert’s Point City Park Steering Committee to get city officials to dedicate the space as a public park with walking trails and green space.
One of the committee’s leaders, Brian Freidman, is thrilled with the support from the city manager’s office and says “we still have our eyes on the prize” to get the park approved. He says Councilwoman Andria McClellan has endorsed the park, but he wants to see support from other members of council.
