NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A large new store covered in Target-red is being planned for the site of two vacant box stores in Wards Corner.
At least that’s what city planning documents show.
A proposal in front of Norfolk City Council calls for the demolition of the 1970-era buildings and construction of a new 150,000 square foot building that would be home to a “large, high-quality general merchandise retail store” with a national footprint.
While nobody’s put their name next to what will go in that space, multiple sources not authorized to speak publicly about the matter say, it’s going to be city’s second Target.
The property is currently owned by Virginia Beach-based Kotarides Companies,
All the city would confirm through planning documents is the new structure would be filled by
a store that includes grocery options. “The proposed retailer has a national footprint with stores in all 50 states and over $1 billion in sales for 2022. It is anticipated that the facility will employ approximately 150 people.”
Another store that’s expected to be demolished is the former Old Virginia Ham Shop, which moved to to 22nd Street in Ghent.
The timeline for demolition and construction is still unclear, but WAVY will continue to monitor the latest on the project, including when Target officially announces the new store.
