NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The weekend began with another string of violence across Hampton Roads, including a shooting that left one man dead on Old Ocean View Road in Norfolk.
Family members say Calvin R Byas, 40, was shot Friday night around 11:40 p.m. in the 7900 block of Old Ocean View Road. His children called 911 several times before dispatch answered and sent police to the scene.
On July 29, police identified Antonio L. Williams, 32, of Norfolk as the suspect. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm.
When police arrived, they found him suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
His wife told 10 On Your Side’s Jon Dowding that Byas was a father of five and described him as a hardworking man.
She also said they feel as if they have been left in the dark regarding much of the details surrounding his death.
There were at least two other overnight shootings in Norfolk, including a man who was transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries and another man who walked into Norfolk General with a gunshot wound.
Jon Dowding spoke with Norfolk’s police chief earlier in the week about the recent increase in violence and what the city hopes to do about it.
“How do we minimize the flow of guns, OK, into the wrong hands,” said Chief Larry Boone. “It’s going to take an awful long time to address those social ills that create poverty and crime and things of that nature.”
Norfolk Police encourage anyone with information about any of these shootings to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
