NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two people are dead following a double stabbing on Dunkirk Avenue in Norfolk Thursday afternoon, police said.
The call came in around 4:52 p.m. for a stabbing in the 3400 block of Dunkirk Avenue, near Columbia Avenue and Tidewater Drive.
Police said the woman, 64-year-old Arneta Thagard, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man, 46-year-old Ronnie C. Campbell, was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed from his injuries.
A neighbor who spoke with WAVY News 10 but did not want to give her name remembers one of the last times she saw Arneta.
“I saw her, they were putting their Christmas tree up and so was I, and I thought, oh that was going to be pretty, so we had a little conversation there about the trees and stuff and that was it. And knowing that I’m not going to see her driving her car anymore, you know? Going to work, coming home. It boggles the mind.”
An initial investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Ronnie N. Campbell, who has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of malicious wounding.
Campbell was arrested on Feb. 8 at approximately 9:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of Alsace Avenue and is currently being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.
The neighbor who spoke with WAVY News 10 has her own theories about what might have happened.
“Mental health is a big issue and I think that was probably what was going on with this person, whoever did it.”
Norfolk police believe this was a domestic-related incident, stating Ronnie N. Campbell is the son of Ronnie C. Campbell and the grandson of Arneta Thagard.
