NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The city of Norfolk’s Parks and Recreation Division’s Norfolk Nighthawks Basketball League is back for the summer 2024 season.

“We know basketball is big in the area, so it’s a way to get them to come out between the hours of 9 p.m. and midnight,” said Leon Bass, division head of recreation, “come out and showcase their talents see if they still got that jump shot.”

That’s what Norfolk Nighthawks is all about — fun and community.

“Norfolk Nighthawks, we’re glad to welcome it back,” Bass said, “It’s a program for 18+ Norfolk residents to come out and showcase their basketball talents in a safe and secure environment.”

It’s environments like those that players enjoy.

“It’s from 9 to 12, so that’s three hours where you’re doing something positive versus out here doing anything something crazy,” player Zo Carter said.

The Nighthawks’ Summer Basketball League is showcased at the Huntersville Community Center, Lambert’s Point Community Center and Norview Community Center.

It’s a free event where you can play ball. Everyone is welcome, and Bass said it’s a way to unite the entire community.

“We couldn’t do this without Norfolk Sheriff’s Department or Norfolk Police Department,” Bass said. “They are pivotal in this program to make sure that everybody is being safe,” Bass said.

“My favorite part is scoring and getting a point,” player Jaylen Drewitt said.

The Nighthawks League goes every Friday through Aug. 17. For more information, click here.
