NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Norfolk’s “welcome home” parade for Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis has been canceled because of weather — but the celebration is still happening.
“Due to expected inclement weather, the remarks portion of the ‘Welcome Home Parade’ event for lightweight division boxer and Olympic Silver Medalist Keyshawn Davis will take place on Aug. 21 at 11:15 a.m. at the Lambert’s Point Recreation Center, 1251 W. 42nd Street. The parade processional is cancelled. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. Face coverings are required while in the facility. City officials, Keyshawn Davis and his family will provide remarks.”

Davis was a competitor in men’s boxing at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
“Norfolk is extremely proud of Keyshawn Davis and his incredible performance at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo,” said Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Ph.D. “He made history this summer, not just for our city but also as a member of the most successful US Olympic Boxing Team this century, and we look forward to honoring our champion this Saturday!”
The fight for the gold against Cuba’s Andy Cruz was Davis’ fifth time boxing in Tokyo. He previously beat Enrico Lacruz (5-0), Sofiane Oumiha (RSC), Gabil Mamedov (4-1) and Hovhannes Bachkov (5-0).
Davis’ boxing career began in Norfolk nearly 13 years ago when his mom enrolled him and his brothers in the city’s boxing program.
City officials say that Davis is the second Olympic medalist boxer from Norfolk. Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker won gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
