NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — For the first time in Norfolk Fire-Rescue’s 150-year history, it will have an African American fire chief, following the swearing-in of Sidney Carroll as its new fire chief Friday.

Carroll was tapped to become Norfolk’s fire chief in April. The Norfolk native joined Norfolk Fire-Rescue in January 1982. He has served as a supervisor in all three operational battalions within the city.

The ceremony was held at the MacArthur Memorial Theater, 198 Bank St. in Norfolk.
