NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two people and two dogs have been displaced following a fire that damaged a Granby Street home Friday morning, Norfolk Fire-Rescue said.
According to officials, the call came in at approximately 7:43 a.m. for a fire in the 5800 block of Granby Street.
Crews arrived to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from an attached garage. After an initial interior attack, the fire spread to the home, hindering an interior attack.
The homeowner, Stanley Clay Walker II, said he tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire himself, but then realized it was just too big. He also worked quickly to get his mom and his dogs to safety.
“Look, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Walker said, adding, “I’m thinking the whole thing is toast. There’s flames coming out the top of the roof. The tree caught on fire. I mean, it was a fiasco.”
A WAVY employee said the fire caused traffic delays on Granby Street, also stating she could smell the smoke while driving over the Granby Street Bridge.
Two northbound lanes on Granby Street were closed as fire crews worked to clear the incident.
Norfolk firefighters said the fast-moving flames hindered their ability to put the fire out at first, but they were able to get it under control by 9:18 a.m. and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Walker said he is still looking for his cat, but his family is staying with neighbors for now.
