NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a crash in Norfolk.
Police say the crash occurred on Feb. 18 in the 1800 block of Granby Street. There were two drivers involved, one of whom was detained by police at the scene. The other driver was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police confirmed that 21-year-old Nathaniel R. Beane was arrested and charged with several crimes including auto theft, two counts of assault on emergency personnel, assault on a health care provider, and disorderly conduct in a hospital.
Beane was taken to the Norfolk City Jail and held without bond.
No further information has been released by police.
10 on your side went to the scene to get an inside look at the damage to the cafe that was hit by the car.
We spoke to the owner of the cafe about the close call and what’s next for the business as they pick up the pieces.
Naci’s Corner Cafe sits at the corner of 19th and Granby streets.
As of Thursday, the open sign was dark and the dining room was empty.
“I was right here,” said owner Jale Evsen, gesturing behind the counter. “Poof — like that and it seemed like a bomb hit us.”
A camera inside the store was rolling when the car plowed into the building.
“Great, finally someone misjudged the distance and hit my wall,” Evsen thought at the time.
Outside cameras caught the crash as well, and show the driver run off.

“I yelled out to him ‘Where are you going? You can not leave,'” Evsen said.
He did not get far. Police arrested Beane quickly.
The building is not condemned but it’s not structurally safe to operate a business. Evsen is relying on insurance to pay for repairs and looks on the bright side.
“I did not get hurt. My staff did not get hurt. My customers did not get hurt. Because it could have gone the other way,” Evsen said.
The best-case scenario for the cafe is to reopen in about eight weeks.
