Family mourns after man shot outside house on Woodview Avenue in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police said a man was killed in a shooting Wednesday night on Woodview Avenue.

The call came in reporting a shooting around 10:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Woodview Avenue, police said.

Officers arrived and found a man dead at the scene. He was identified on Thursday afternoon as 48-year-old Tridarrell J. Reap, of Norfolk.

The shooting was the first of two that happened within about five minutes of each other in Norfolk. The other shooting was around 10:45 p.m. on Berkley Avenue Ext., in a different part of the city.

The family confirmed to 10 On Your Side that Reap fell on the lawn outside his duplex Wednesday night when he was shot.

Hector Rodriguez lives next block over.

“I heard 10 shots… Bang, bang, bang, 10 shots. It sounded like the guy had a 10-shot clip on the gun. I thought it was fireworks because sometimes the military over here, they have a lot of fireworks going off over there this time of year. That’s what I thought at first,” he said.

We don’t know how many guns were involved.

Rodriguez says this neighborhood on Woodview Avenue near the naval base is quiet, and it’s not often you hear gunshots.

“I came out here when I heard the shots all the way to the tree,” he said, pointing to a tree in his front yard still out of view of Reap’s home.

“You don’t want to go out anyway,” he said.

10 On Your Side met the family at the family home, but they didn’t want to talk on camera. They said Reap was a good man who went out of his way to help others.

They said he had the same steady job for 25 years, but would not identify what job. They said he is another victim of senseless violence, that he took care of his family, and that he mattered.

Friends showed up bringing food and drink to share grief with the Reap family on Thursday.

Police have not released many details about what happened, but the family said he was shot as he walked to his white car in the driveway, and he fell to the ground on the grass next to the car.

Rodriguez thinks the shooting raises — again — the issue of guns.

“Gun laws. The governor has got to do something about it. It’s not taking the guns away from people, it’s just controlling who’s getting the guns,” he said.
