NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A preliminary hearing for two Chesapeake men accused of staging a fake robbery of an armored truck in Norfolk has been pushed back.

Norfolk Police arrested Keith Doughty and Joshua Mercado on multiple charges for a March 19 robbery, which happened near the Wards Corner section of the city.

Responding officers spoke with a Brink’s employee who told him a man wearing a motorcycle helmet robbed him at gunpoint and stole cash from the truck.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed a man in a helmet walk up to the truck on the driver’s side before walking away with a blue bin. The employee left the parking lot and returned a couple of minutes later — and then walked into a business and then back out to the truck.

Police said it was determined the employee was an accomplice who helped fake the robbery “to conceal the stealing of a large amount of cash.”

Mercado, 26, was later identified as the Brink’s employee. He is charged with grand larceny, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, embezzlement, conspiracy to commit embezzlement and obstruction of justice: false police report.

Doughty, 26, is charged with robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit embezzlement.

Both men have been held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond since their arrest in March.

The preliminary hearing for Doughty and Mercado is now set for July 8.
