NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The warning period is over. If you’re caught speeding through a school zone in Norfolk where cameras were installed back in March, you’ll now receive a $100 fine.

The cameras are a first for the city, with an aim to make the streets safer for young students and their families. They also free up some resources for law enforcement. They were switched on in early March throughout nine Norfolk school zones.

The cameras are set up to catch speeders during pick-up and drop-off times. During the 60-day grace period, speeders caught by the cameras got a warning sent in the mail. As of May 6, the the grace period is now over, meaning drivers will get a $100 fine.

According to a city spokesperson, more than 39,000 warnings were sent out during the 60-day trial period.

Drivers 10 On Your Side spoke to in Norfolk Monday said they are happy to see these cameras come to school zones.

“Safe for the kids, stop the people from driving fast. Yeah, I think it’s good,” Antwoine responded. He added, he thinks the fine should be higher.

“If you’re speeding, you’re speeding,” Dian Washington said. “You don’t need to be speeding in a school zone, that would hurt kids.”

19 cameras have been installed around 10 Norfolk Public School locations.
