NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 21-year-old man is dead and a 20-year-old man is in jail after a fatal shooting in a Wawa parking lot late Saturday night in Norfolk, police say.
Norfolk police announced on Wednesday morning that they arrested Joseph K. Pagano, of Norfolk, and charged him with second-degree murder and use of a firearm. He’s being held at the Norfolk City Jail with bond denied.
“It was a pretty wild scene, something I’m not use to seeing on a regular basis,” said Shon Bynum.
A peaceful Saturday evening was interrupted by gunfire at the Wawa off Princess Anne Road. Police were brought there during the investigation after a young man showed up to Sentara Norfolk General with gunshot wounds.
“When you see that many cops and stuff taped off — you can kinda take a good guess at what may have happened,” said Bynum.
Police say 21-year-old Tabari Anthony was shot in the lot around 11 p.m. on Saturday. One nearby neighbor said he heard and saw the aftermath.
“I heard the gunshots and then I seen a car run into another car. It sounded like a car backfiring. There were about five, maybe four or five shots,” said the neighbor who asked to stay anonymous.
Anthony later died at the hospital.
“That’s not good, that’s not good at all. All I can do is pray for his family. That’s tough, 21 years old — he hadn’t even really got to live his life yet,” said Bynum.
The neighbors say they’re not all that surprised to hear of violence in their area.
“You hear gunshots over here all the time. They’re farther in distance, that was the closest one,” said another neighbor.
“This year I can’t really, you know, nothing really surprises me. This year, what we living through right now, it’s kinda crazy. So, nothing surprises me at this point,” added Bynum.
No motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting have been released by police.
