13-year-old shot in Norfolk on Mother’s Day dies, police say

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Mother’s Day shooting in Norfolk is now a homicide investigation.

Police say 13-year-old Jaydon Davis has died after he was shot on May 12 in Norfolk.

On Tuesday night, police were back out near the intersection of Lincoln Street and East Olney Road looking for answers.

There are still no arrests in this crime.

Flowers and balloons now mark the spot where Davis’ future was cut short.

The memorial in the background, Norfolk police officers went door to door in Young Terrace with three words in mind: Justice for Jaydon.

“It’s heart wrenching when anyone becomes a victim of violent crime but when you’re talking about a 13-year-old-boy, it just hits home for all of us,” said Jo Ann Hughes, Public Information Officer with Norfolk Police Department,

Davis died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, nine days after he was found shot at the intersection of E. Olney Road and Lincoln Street.

Officers handed out flyers with his picture and door hangers with information encouraging the public to come forward. Police said they don’t have many leads.

“We know somebody out there saw something, heard something or since that time, has gotten some information that they just aren’t sure how to get it to police,” Hughes said,

The shooting happened just down the street from Teens With a Purpose, a non-profit dedicated to keeping youth engaged and out of trouble. We’re told some of the teens who are part of the non-profit knew Davis.

“It’s heartbreaking. We work with the teens in this area all the time so anytime we hear about anybody in this neighborhood getting hurt, it affects us,” said Shana Smith-Coleman.

“A lot of the teens that go here, they actually walk here. It makes me feel scared for them because you never know what’s going to happen,” said Tiffany Sawyer, one of the youth involved with the non-profit.

It’s not known what led up to the shooting but police say someone does know and they’re working against the clock to find Davis’ killer.

“If you were out there that day, heard something, just even if it seemed insignificant to you, it could be that piece of puzzle that we need to help solve this crime,” Hughes said.
