NNPD: Assault suspect barricades himself in residence with family

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A barricade situation unfolded in Newport News Sunday afternoon after officers responded to a report of an assault, police said.

Just before 3 p.m., officers responded to the 5000 block of 72nd Street in reference to a domestic disturbance.

Upon arrival, a woman reported being assaulted by a man in the residence. After further investigation, it was determined the man was in the home with several family members. Police confirmed the man has outstanding warrants in reference to a prior incident.

Family members were inside with the suspect during negotiations. At 6:30 p.m., police said the man, 31-year-old Anthony Jovan Williams, was taken into custody.

Williams was charged with two counts of abuse of a family member, four counts of abduction, four counts of endangerment of a juvenile and one count of obstruction of justice.
