NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman’s death on Wheeler Drive in Newport News is being investigated as a homicide, police say.
Officers were called to the 900 block of Wheeler Drive in the Nelson area around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday and found the 53-year-old woman dead. Police say it appears that she was physically assaulted.
There’s no suspect information or other details at this time. On Friday morning, police identified her as 53-year-old Yolanda Moton.
A woman who identified herself as Moton’s daughter told WAVY News her mother was a private, hard-working woman. She said she could not understand why someone would want to kill her.
A neighbor said Moton’s death has sent shockwaves through her Denbigh neighborhood.
“The world is missing a great person, that’s all I can say,” said Avery Jones, who lives directly across Wheeler Drive.
Moton was found dead by her daughter Wednesday afternoon.
Police came to the house late Thursday morning as they continued their homicide investigation.
Jones says she was the type who would think of others before herself and would often leave groceries on his front porch for him and his family.
“Whatever she bought, she would get it for you. And Christmas was amazing,” he said. ‘[She’d get presents] for my granddaughter, wife, kids, everybody. My son doesn’t even live here no more, and she made sure that he got some.”
Jones says she lived in the home with her sons.
Police say Moton was physically assaulted, but have released no further details about her death.
“And when we heard what happened to her, not her, not her! I had just seen her at 7 p.m. Tuesday,” Jones said. “She didn’t deserve that. We all know that we’re going to die, but to get murdered in your own home?”
