Suspicious package in Newport News was suitcase with clothes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A suspicious package reported at Old Oyster Point Road and Guinevere Court on Friday ended up being a suitcase containing clothes.

According to Newport News police, a call came in at approximately 11:05 a.m. for a suspicious package in the area of 1 Guenevere Court.


Chopper 10 flew over the scene and captured footage of multiple emergency vehicles and personnel investigating the surrounding area.

The Newport News Fire and Police Departments, the Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bomb Squad all responded to the scene.

Three apartments were temporarily evacuated during the investigation. Part of Old Oyster Point Road was closed between Marcus Drive and Stag Terrace as well.

According the Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Haraburda, bomb technicians determined the suspicious package was an unattended suitcase near a construction dumpster. Clothes were found inside of the suitcase.

There are no charges related to this incident.
