NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges after a deputy witnessed him firing at a moving vehicle in Newport News on Monday, police say.

Newport News Police said 21-year-old Trashon Lamont Williams facing charges including maliciously shooting at a car for the alleged incident.

Police said the deputy was near 18th Street and Ivy Avenue just before 1:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots. The deputy turned the corner and saw a suspect, later identified as Williams, firing at a moving vehicle.

The deputy took Williams into custody after ordering him to the ground, police said.

During an interview with investigators, police said Williams claimed someone inside the SUV shot at him and he was firing back in self-defense.

Police later found the SUV unoccupied with multiple bullet holes.

Williams was arrested after further investigation and was booked at the Newport News City Jail.

Police said Williams is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, shooting a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing after forbidden to do so.
