Woman, child injured after interstate shooting on I-64 in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene of an interstate shooting Thursday evening in Newport News that resulted in minor injuries to a woman and child.

State Police started receiving calls around 5:18 p.m. about a shooting incident on Interstate 64 westbound at mile marker 253 near Denbigh Boulevard.


The investigation found that someone inside an unknown vehicle fired shots at a silver Ford Focus, with two adults and a child inside.

The female passenger in the Ford was shot. State Police say her injury is not life-threatening. The child in the back seat suffered scrapes and cuts from broken glass and the man driving the vehicle was not hurt.

As of 7 p.m., traffic was still backed up for about three miles on I-64 westbound near the scene.

The suspect vehicle fled and has not been located. Virginia State Police is asking for the community’s help.
