NN Police release details of celebration of life and service for fallen officer Katie Thyne

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News Police have released the details for the celebration of life for fallen officer Katie Thyne.

The memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 3, at Liberty Baptist Church, located at 1021 Big Bethel Road in Hampton.

Officer Thyne was dragged by the open driver’s side door as the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene near Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park in Newport News on Thursday evening.

Per an order Friday from @GovernorVA, U.S. and Virginia flags are to be lowered across the state to half staff Monday from sunrise to sunset to honor the memory of Katherine "Katie" Thyne, a Newport News police officer who was fatally wounded in a traffic stop Jan. 23.

The city of Newport News remembers Thyne as someone who was always smiling and “a true hero” to the community she’d been serving since her police graduation ceremony on June 2019.
