NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – High school students enrolled in Newport News Public Schools will have to start wearing student IDs this Tuesday, April 9.
According to school officials, all students will be required to wear a T-Pass student ID while on school grounds and on the bus in an effort to improve safety and security.
T-Pass IDs were originally issued in September of 2022 as a part of the division’s bus ridership program, which allowed parents and guardians to see when and where the students got on and off the bus.
All students were issued a new ID before spring break, as well as a lanyard and holder. A temporary ID will be given to students who misplace their T-Pass.
Students will not be allowed to change or alter their T-Pass student IDs in any way, and must scan their IDs as they board and exit the school bus. ID will also be required to proceed through the entry checkpoint and for any school-sponsored on-campus activities and events.
Students refusing to wear their T-Pass student ID will be found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. The sanctions for violation can be found below:
- 1st offense: Verbal warning; temporary ID will be printed for student
- 2nd offense: Parent/guardian notification; verbal warning; temporary ID will be printed for student
- 3rd offense: Parent/guardian notification; verbal warning and one day of in-school suspension; temporary ID will be printed for student
- 4th offense: Parent/guardian notification; verbal warning and three days of in-school suspension; temporary ID will be printed for student
