NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Police Department has charged a man in connection to the homicide of 22-year-old Tyreek Lemar Vincent. Vincent’s remains were found Wednesday on vacant land in Hampton.
Officers covered the field that separates both ends of Dafia Drive in the Northampton area of the city, according to neighbors.
A mound of dug up earth could still be seen Friday.
Vincent, reported missing last week, was last seen on September 20 near the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and 32nd Street in Newport News’ Washington community.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16, police announced the arrest of 35-year-old Azbel Saralegi in connection with the homicide.
Saralegi has been charged with first-degree murder and several gun offenses in the death of Vincent.
Officers received a tip on the missing person’s investigation according to a statement from police. Utilizing technology, the tip led them to Dafia Drive.
“In addition to the hard work of our detectives, I would like to thank our partners at the Hampton Police Division for their assistance in this case and the many hours they worked to assist in locating Mr. Vincent,” Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said in a statement.
