Newport News Police holds procession for fallen officer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The Newport News Police Department held a procession to transport the body of fallen Officer Thyne Saturday afternoon.

The transport was from the Norfolk medical examiner’s office to Altmeyer Funeral Home on River Road in Newport News.

The procession began from Southampton Avenue in Norfolk at 1:00 p.m. then traveled on Interstate 664 North and exit on 25th Street onto Jefferson Avenue.

Rebecca Boback herself a former Suffolk Police Officer left the force because she feared this fate for herself. One day she said she hopes her young daughter understands why being there to watch the procession is important.

“Something like this could happen, how important it was to value everyday life and to love each other and never in those types of things cause you just never know if you’re gonna go home,” said Rebecca Boback.

The procession paused shortly at NNPD South Precinct, where Officer Thyne was assigned.

Afterward, the procession continued North on Jefferson, turning left on Mercury Blvd., and then left on River Road.

“Sad that she lost everything ahead of her, that she gave up to help protect the community, her whole life,” said Newport News resident Lynn Cooper.

“You see the elderly out here and you see the children out here, you know I’m going to miss her, I’m going to miss her. God knows I am,” said Boone.

Police said arrangements for services in memory of Thyne will be shared when they are available.
