Multi-vehicle crash at James River Bridge results in fatality, 15-month-old child among hospitalized

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash in the southbound lanes of the James River Bridge.

According to state police, the call for the two-vehicle crash came in just after 8 p.m. Thursday.


A preliminary investigation of the crash revealed that a 2002 Hyundai was stopped in the right traffic lane. The driver exited the vehicle and went into the rear, driver-side door, with the door open, reaching into the back seat. 

At the same time, the driver of a 2020 Subaru came up behind the stopped Hyundai and struck it from behind. The driver of the 2002 Hyundai was struck and killed. Police identified the driver as 58-year-old Ray Charles Spencer of Hampton.

The male driver of the Subaru and his 15-month-old child were transported to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News with non life-threatening injuries.

State Police have charged Evan Raycraft of Smithfield, Virginia with reckless driving.

Investigators say neither alcohol nor speed were contributing factors.
