NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A former Newport News substitute teacher has been arrested on charges of child pornography.
The police department’s Special Victims Unit went to the home of 50-year-old Michael Scott Porter Friday and executed a search warrant. During their search, they reportedly found Porter in possession of child pornography.
Police officials confirmed that Porter is a former substitute teacher for the public school system and for the Mid-Atlantic Teen Challenge.
He’s facing three counts of possession of child pornography.
Someone was inside the home when we knocked but no one answered the door.
It’s not yet clear how investigators were tipped off.
“They was out here when I opened the door and I was like ‘wow oh my god, what in the world is going on?'” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.
We called the Newport News school district and a spokeswoman confirmed Porter worked as a substitute from August 2017 to August 2018.
The spokeswoman said all employees must pass a national background check along with a statewide check with Child Protective Services.
The executive director for Mid-Atlantic Teen Challenge told us via email Porter last worked for the organization in the late 90s and was also screened before being hired.
Neighbors said the charges are unsettling.
“It shocked me. It really shocked me,” the neighbor said. “I am concerned because I got kids.”
“You don’t ever really know what’s going on inside someone’s house,” said Martha Hernandez, another neighbor.
Porter is currently at the Newport News jail and bond has not been set yet.
We are working to get a copy of the search warrant and will update you as soon as we learn more.
