NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges including murder after two people were shot and killed at a restaurant in Newport News Thursday afternoon.
Newport News police said in a news release 37-year-old Darrell Keith Chaney Jr. is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, possession of firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharging a firearm within a building.
Chaney’s arrest came after officers responded to the Dunn’s River Jamaican and Caribbean Restaurant in the 5000 block of Jefferson Avenue shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Police said two men found shot at the scene were pronounced dead. The two victims were identified Friday as 55-year-old Akhi Ar-Rad Abdul Haqq Murad and 62-year-old Barrington Anthony Brown.
10 On Your Side obtained probable cause for a search warrant which shows Chaney admitted to police in an interview that he shot the two men.
A booking photo of Chaney was not provided due to an ongoing investigation, according to police.
Officers were able to get to and quickly arrest Chaney one block from the restaurant thanks to witnesses who called in a description moments after the shooting.
10 On Your Side spoke with one of those witnesses who was inside the restaurant when shots were fired.
Shanecia Eley said she’s still trying to process what she experienced Thursday afternoon.
“I’m just shocked, my patient is shocked,” Eley said.
Eley and a patient she cares for walked inside Dunn’s River Jamaican and Caribbean restaurant to grab lunch. A repeat customer, she said the restaurant owner was talking with a man when they walked in.
“It wasn’t no yelling, just a normal conversation,” Eley said.
She said the owner paused the conversation to help them and that’s when things changed.
“The man became irate. He was just like ‘you gonna stop talking to them? I’m here. I been here,” Eley said.
She said the man went to a table while the owner continued helping them. Eley claims the man started mocking a Jamaican accent.
“I asked the owner ‘do you know him?’ and he said ‘nah I don’t know him.’” Eley said. “I guess when I said that, he said ‘oh Imma show you something.’He pulled out his revolver, walked up between me and my patient and shot him dead in his head. The other man came out from the side and he shot and killed him too.”
Terrified for her own life, Eley said she ran from the restaurant and called 911.
“I was on the phone with police and I said he’s walking down the street like he did nothing wrong, I just kept saying that. He’s walking, y’all need to hurry up and get here fast,” she said.
Officers found the alleged shooter walking down the street from the restaurant. He was detained for questioning.
Newport News Police have not identified the victims but say they’re 62 years old and 55 years old.
“Hopefully we can bring justice to the family and by detaining somebody as quickly as we did, thanks to the public, I think we’ll do that,” said Brandon Maynard, with Newport News Police.
“Something didn’t seem right about him, I’m glad they got him,” Eley said.
