NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Christopher Newport University and Riverside College of Health Sciences (RCHS) are joining forces for an innovative new nursing program.

The institutions have partnered to create a 3+2 dual-degree program that allows student to spend three years in a liberal arts program at Christopher Newport and two years at RCHS for specialized training in nursing.

At the end of the five year program, students will earn both a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Additionally, Riverside intends to immediately offer employment to graduates who meet all other qualifications.

Christopher Newport President William G. Kelly and Dr. Robin Nelhuebel, President of RCHS inked the partnership agreement Wednesday during a signing ceremony at RCHS.

“Great neighbors make for a great community,” said Kelly. CNU is proud to be the hometown university for Newport News. We are proud that we can work with Riverside to educate and prepare the nurses so critical to the health of our community.”

The partnership aims to address the growing need for health care professionals in the region and nationwide.

“We are proud to partner with Christopher Newport University to create a local pathway to high-demand careers in nursing and allied health,” said Nelhuebel. “This agreement supports the health care workforce needs of the Peninsula and beyond while leveraging the strengths of both institutions.”

According to the news release, nearly 200,000 RN openings across the country are projected annually through 2032.
