NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The public was asked to avoid the area of Davis Park Drive due to an armed, barricaded man in Newport News Thursday morning.
Tactical units and crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the subject, who was reported as armed and possibly suicidal, but were unsuccessful. Police say that there is no known threat to the public at this time, and tactical operations were ended at 5:50 a.m.
Officials said they were notified of the barricaded subject just after 1:40 a.m. in the 0 block of Davis Park Drive, at the Davis Mobile Home and RV Park.
The Newport News Police Department will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day, but say that there is no longer a reason to force a way in.
Northbound and southbound traffic were temporarily closed at 74th St. and Jefferson Ave during the negotiation, but have since reopened.
