2 York High students killed in crash near Lee Hall in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two York High School students died after a crash Friday, June 10 on Yorktown Road in Newport News.

It involved an SUV and tractor-trailer and happened just before noon on Yorktown Road near Lee Hall.

One person in the SUV, a 15-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene and a 16-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn’t injured.

Police initially said their preliminary investigation found the SUV was heading south at a high rate of speed when it ran into the truck, which was heading north. The SUV’s speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

On Monday, York County School Division officials confirmed the crash victims were York High students, and identified them as Daequan Hawkins and Jacobi Cockrell.

Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil at Bailey Field Monday night in the teens’ memory.
