Shooting victim dies after crash at W 35th and Llewellyn in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a man died after he was shot and then involved in a vehicle crash Friday morning at W. 35th Street and Llewellyn Avenue in Norfolk.

Norfolk dispatchers got the call for the crash at 6:41 a.m. The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the hospital. He has been identified as Deonta A. Flythe Jr., 21.

Detectives believe he was shot in the 1400 block of Shelton Avenue, off E. Princess Anne Road between Azalea Garden Road and N. Military Highway.

James Washington lives nearby and says he heard a loud boom when the accident happened, something he says is common at this intersection.

“It sounded like a big boom. Woke me out of my sleep,” he said. “This is not the first time we have an accident on 35th and Llewellyn. This is a problem corner. We have a lot of accidents on this corner maybe 6, 7 times a year. Cars running lights.”

Barron Hawkins heard it happen a few doors down and knew it was at 35th and Llewellyn.

“There’s several accidents at this particular intersection. In fact, my wife was hit at that intersection. She was parked on this side of 35th Street when two cars came. For whatever reason, they’re running that light,” said Hawkins.

Neighbors say the gun violence problem doesn’t seem to be getting any better lately.

“It’s very concerning because the violence in Norfolk is running rampant. And every night I hear gunshots. Not in this area, but several, about a mile away you can hear it late at night. You hear gunshots at night,” said Washington.

Hawkins has one request for anyone who wants to drive through his neighborhood.

“Observe the speed limit. I mean really. And take caution to the fact that the lights turn red and you supposed to stop. That’s, that’s it. When the light is red, stop,” he said.

No other details have been released, but W. 34th Street to W. 36th Street was blocked off for the investigation and 10 On Your Side saw someone being taken away in handcuffs.
