NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk City Councilwoman Andria McClellan announced Tuesday that she won’t seek reelection this November.

“It is with a profound sense of gratitude and a heavy hart that I announce my decision not to seek reelection …” said McClellan, who’s represented Norfolk’s Superward 6 since May 2016. “… this decision to not seek reelection is a difficult one, yet my commitment to Norfolk and our region remains unwavering, and I look forward to supporting my successor in this critical role.”

McClellan says after her term ends this year she’ll continue to serve on various boards “advocating for solutions to mitigate flooding and enhancing civic discourse and protecting democracy, while also re-engaging my entrepreneurial skills and, most of all, I am eager to spend more time with my family, now spread across the country.”

McClellan pointed to some of her work and accomplishments from recent years on Tuesday, such as co-authoring Norfolk’s Climate Action Plan and serving as co-chair of the Norfolk Mayor’s Commission on Social Equity and Economic Opportunity.

She’s also served as chair of Hampton Roads Transit, the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and Southside Network Authority’s Regional Broadband Ring.

McClellan recently ran for Virginia State Senate as a Democrat in 2023, but lost the primary to Angelia Williams Graves. She also ran for Virginia lieutenant governor in 2021.
