NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After committing sexually-charged crimes against three women within two days, a man in Norfolk will spend most, if not all, his remaining life in prison. He was sentenced on Nov. 22.
On May 29, 2022, 32-year-old Ryan Kearney trespassed into the first woman’s home after her husband left for work. After sneaking in through the unlocked back door and removing his shoes, he snuck up on the woman while she was showering and raped her as her son slept in a separate room. Police said Kearney also stole the victim’s husband’s watch during the assault.
The following day, Kearney went to another house that a woman was using as a short-term rental. After the woman fell asleep on the back porch, she awoke in the middle of the night to Kearney assaulting her. She hit her assailant before running inside and chasing him off with her gun, a release states.
Right after fleeing, Kearney wasted no time before he snuck into a third home through a partially opened garage. He snuck into a woman’s bedroom while her family was sleeping under the same roof.
The woman woke up to his movements, and originally mistook him for her father before she heard an unfamiliar voice. She screamed before he was able to cover her face and kicked Kearney in the groin.
As her parents came running to check on her, Kearney was able to escape through the garage.
One of the officers who responded to the third woman’s house recognized Kearney from the house’s doorbell camera footage, as the officer had just seen him at a nearby convenience store.
Officers were able to find Kearney off East Little Creek Road — he was wearing the first victim’s husband’s watch when he was taken into custody.
The charges against Kearney as a result of the Norfolk Police’s investigation led to three separate proceedings this year:
In March, a jury found Kearney guilty, in the first victim’s case, of object sexual penetration, attempted forcible sodomy, forcible sodomy, statutory burglary with the intent to commit rape and attempted rape.
In August, for the case of the third victim, after already failing to convince a jury of his innocence in his first case, Kearney was requested to be tried by a judge instead of a jury. However, the judge still found Kearney guilty of statutory burglary with the intent to commit rape.
Lastly, in October, with both convictions for his first and third victim, Kearney entered a plea agreement instead of moving forward with a trial for his second victim’s case. He was found guilty of object sexual penetration and his plea agreement called for a maximum active prison sentence of 10 years on that charge alone.
On Nov. 22, Kearney was sentenced for all his charges by Judge Everett A. Martin Jr., who presided over Kearney’s jury trial. Judge Martin sentenced Kearney to serve 70 years in prison plus three years of post-release supervision.
