Man made race-targeted threats in Mathews County, sheriff’s office says

MATHEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been arrested after making multiple racial threats recently in Mathews County, authorities say.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office says Randal Diggs was arrested on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. He’s been charged with a felony for giving a false report to law enforcement officials on individuals solely because of their race, and three misdemeanor counts of threaten an illegal or immoral act with the intent to coerce, intimidate, or harass a person over the telephone in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 

The sheriff’s office says Diggs made relayed the threats in multiple phone calls to the Sheriff’s Office 911 Center between July and August. They said they also found evidence in Diggs’ vehicle that substantiated some of threats.

WAVY’s working to learn more about the nature of the threats, including who Diggs allegedly targeted. He’s being held without bond and is expected to be arraigned on September 4.
