PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Monday’s rainy, wintry weather is continuing to impact some schools, businesses and city services into Tuesday. Falling temperatures could make wet roads icy and potentially hazardous.

WAVY.com has compiled a list of changes to public school system and city services for both Monday and Tuesday due to the weather conditions:

Accomack County

Accomack County General District Court delayed opening until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Accomack County government offices. Closed today. Check website for more information.

Accomack Public Schools will have a virtual learning day Tuesday, Jan 4. 12-month employees work from home.

Chesapeake

All City of Chesapeake office and facilities will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Trash and recycling will continue, but there may be delays.

Chesapeake Public Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay Tuesday. AM preschool is canceled and PM preschool has a 1-hour delay. Also, the morning session of the CPK career center is canceled; the afternoon session will operate on a regular schedule.

All Chesapeake Public Schools after-school events and activities were canceled Monday. This includes the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA after-school care programs. The evening program for the Chesapeake Center for Student Success will operate online.

The COVID-19 testing sites at selected elementary schools have been canceled. Testing sites will re-open Wednesday, January 5 at 3 p.m. for asymptomatic students and employees only.

Dare County

Dare County Schools were on an early release schedule Monday. The ASEP program and after school activities were canceled Monday.

Edenton

Edenton-Chowan Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 4, due to the potential for icy roadways.

Franklin

Franklin City Public Schools and the Central Office will operate on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 4 because of potentially hazardous road conditions.

Gates County

Gates County Schools will be on a two-hour delay Tuesday.

Gloucester

Gloucester Schools will be on a two-hour delay Tuesday.

Gloucester courts will have a delayed opening Tuesday until 10 a.m. and the Gloucester County offices have a delayed opening until 11 a.m.

Greensville County

Greensville Schools are closed Tuesday. 12-month employees will report at 11:30 a.m.

Hampton

Hampton city offices, libraries, and community centers will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Essential employees should report as usual, unless told otherwise. Other employees should report at 10 a.m.

Hampton City Schools will be closed Tuesday to all students. Employees are instructed to check email regarding the work schedule. Tuesday evening sporting events are still planned as scheduled. All school buildings and administrative offices will be closed Tuesday until 10 a.m. for staff.

Hampton schools closed two hours early Monday. All after-school activities at Hampton community centers were also canceled. Here’s the message posted to their Facebook page.

Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight County Public Schools will be on a 2-hour delay Tuesday.

Mathews County

Mathews County Public Schools were closed on Monday and again on Tuesday.

Mathews County offices have a delayed opening Tuesday.

Middlesex County

Middlesex County government offices will operate on a 2-hour delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Middlesex County schools will be closed on Tuesday.

Newport News

Christopher Newport University will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Campus facilities will open at 10 a.m.

Newport News Public Schools will be closed Tuesday.

The following message was sent to families on Monday:

Due to the wintry weather and icy road conditions forecast for early tomorrow morning, all Newport News Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 4, for all students.  

At this time, evening sporting events are still planned as scheduled. All other school activities are cancelled for Tuesday. 

Meals-to-Go Service is available for all students on Tuesday at all NNPS elementary schools from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Families may drive up to receive a take-home lunch and breakfast.  

All school offices and school administration offices will open at 11 a.m. 

Norfolk

All Norfolk Public Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay on Tuesday, January 4. Essential personnel will report on time.

Norfolk Public Schools canceled all after-school activities and programs for Monday, January 3. This includes YMCA, Norfolk Parks and Recreation, Champions, Boys and Girls Clubs, and Berkley/Campostella Early Childhood Education Center.

All City of Norfolk government offices, libraries and recreation centers closed on Monday at 2 p.m.

All City of Norfolk government offices and libraries, including Slover Library, will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Recreation Centers will open at their regularly scheduled times, except the Horace Downing Senior Center, the Therapeutic Recreation Center and the East Oceanview Senior Center, which will delay opening until 10 a.m.

Trash collection will take place as usual on Tuesday.

Northampton County, NC

Northampton County Schools are closed Tuesday.

Poquoson

Poquoson City Public Schools are delayed 3 hours on Tuesday.

Poquoson government offices delayed opening until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth Public Schools will open two hours late on Tuesday.

All Portsmouth courts closed at 11 a.m. Monday because of the weather. Recreation centers with the Department of Parks and Recreation and all libraries closed at 3 p.m.  

Portsmouth City Offices will open with a 2-hour delay at 10 a.m. on Tuesday for all non-essential employees.

The Middle Street and County Street Garages, 2nd floor and above, will be open and available for vehicles in low-lying areas Monday due to the winter storm. No trailers are permitted. Vehicles may remain in the garages until Tuesday at 7 a.m. prior to 8 a.m. operating hours. People cannot park in spaces marked “Reserved,” and must observe garage clearances: Middle Street 6’10” and County Street 7’.

Suffolk

All three Suffolk Library locations (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk and Chuckatuck) will be closing at 6 p.m. Monday. Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk Libraries will reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4.

All Suffolk Parks & Rec youth sports practices scheduled for Monday were canceled.

Additionally, the Whaleyville Recreation Center closed at 6 p.m. Monday.

The East Suffolk Recreation Center, the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Administration Office and the Suffolk Visitor Center all closed early Monday because of a power outage.

The following message was emailed out to Suffolk schools parents on Monday, Jan. 3:

As temperatures drop below freezing, Suffolk Public Schools will open on Tuesday, January 4 with a 2-hour delay for students and staff.
A two-hour delay means:
Bus pick-ups for all students will begin two hours later than normal pick-up times.
Breakfast will NOT be served. Lunch will be served.
Dismissal time will remain the same unless otherwise noted.

City of Suffolk facilities will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Refuse and recycling collection will run as normally scheduled on Tuesday,. Suffolk Transit will also operate on a regular schedule on Tuesday.

Surry County

Surry schools will be closed Tuesday.

Sussex County

Sussex County Public Schools will be closed Tuesday.

Thomas Nelson Community College

The following message was posted on Thomas Nelson Community College’s Facebook page Sunday night:

Due to the forecast for winter weather for the Peninsula area on Monday, January 3, College faculty and staff are asked to work remotely.

Campuses in Williamsburg and Hampton will be closed to the public.

Enrollment and other student services will be available online.

Virginia Beach

All VBCPS schools and offices will open on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Click here to find the delayed-opening schedule.

City of Virginia Beach will delay opening city facilities and offices until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

  • The Virginia Beach Department of Health.
  • Rec centers, early childhood programs and parks will be opening at 10 a.m. 
  • Out of School Time (OST) before-school programs are canceled due to school delay 
  • There will be a two-hour delay for waste, recycling and landfill services 
  • The Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is operating under a two-hour delay. The Clerk’s Office will open at 10 a.m. and court hearings will begin at 11 a.m. Other courts will be opening under normal business hours beginning at 9 a.m.

Alpha I employees should contact their supervisors for further information on reporting responsibilities. Alpha II employees should report beginning at 10 a.m. or at their scheduled time if it’s after 10 a.m.

Williamsburg- James City County

All district schools opened time on Monday, but followed an early release schedule. All after-school activities were also canceled.

WJCC Schools are closed Tuesday, Jan. 4, for all students and staff. All school and extracurricular activities are canceled, and there will not be virtual learning.

The Williamsburg- James City County Courthouse will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The City of Williamsburg will delay opening all offices and facilities, including Waller Mill Park, until 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4.

York County

The York County School Division will be closed for students Tuesday, Jan. 4. There will be a staff work day Tuesday. Essential personnel should report on site as directed by their supervisors. All other employees should work from home as directed by their supervisors.
