PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A local nonprofit providing no-cost home repairs for cost-burdened residents of Hampton Roads officially launched Wednesday.
According to Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads, their mission is to rebuild homes, revitalizing communities and transform lives.
The organization’s most recent project provided home improvements to a woman who recently welcomed her daughter and granddaughter into her residence and wants to create a safe, welcoming space for them.
“I had no idea I would be chosen, and here we are,” said homeowner Carmen Phifer. “It’s awesome.”
Ferguson supported the effort by volunteering alongside Rebuilding Together to replace handrails, repair siding and gutters, install new flooring, paint the front porch and more.
“Hampton Roads is an aging housing stock, and there’s a myriad of services that can work together to really help residents here in the area,” said Sabrina Jones, steering committee member and founding board member for Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads. “The need is high, and we can never have enough services to meet that need. So I think this fills an essential gap in our area.”
In 2025, Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads will serve the neighborhoods of Hampton and Newport News with plans to expand in the future.
