Labor Day closures in Hampton Roads | 2024

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — This year, the Labor Day holiday falls on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024. Several local cities have announced how the holiday specifically impacts services, like trash pickup, and facilities, such as libraries and recreation centers.

Hampton

All Hampton city offices will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, but the parks, museums and golf courses will remain open, as well as the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach.

There will be no trash or recycling collections on Monday, Sept. 2, as the city observes the Labor Day holiday. Monday’s collections will be done on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Monday’s street sweeping will also be moved to Wednesday, and Wednesday’s street sweeping will be done on Friday, Sept. 6.

Norfolk

The following locations will be closed in Norfolk on Sept. 2 for Labor Day:

All beaches will remain open on Labor Day, and lifeguards will be on duty at Community Beach Park from noon until 6 p.m. Lifeguards will not be on duty at Ocean View Beach Park and Sarah Constant Beach Park.

Portsmouth

Suffolk

SUFFOLK, VA (August 22, 2024) In observance of the Labor Day Holiday, Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, September 2, 2024. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. The City observes all state-designated holidays. Labor Day is considered a holiday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and all State offices are closed on this day.

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled the period of September 3 – 6. TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes the period of September 3 – 6. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7am on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk and the Regional Landfill will be open Monday, September 2 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Suffolk Transit will not operate on Monday, September 2.

Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Recreation Centers (Kings Fork, Creekside, Northern Shores, Oakland, Booker T. Washington, Mack Benn, Jr.) will be closed on Monday, September 2 and reopen on Tuesday, September 3 at 6:30 a.m. The East Suffolk Recreation Center, Curtis Milteer Recreation Center and

Bennett’s Creek Recreation Center will be closed on Monday, September 2 and reopen on Tuesday, September 3 at 6 a.m. Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed on Monday, September 2, and reopen on Tuesday, September 3 at 8:30 a.m.

Suffolk’s four major parks (Lone Star Lakes, Lake Meade, Sleepy Hole, Bennett’s Creek) will remain open Monday, September 2. However, no park attendant will be on duty.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Monday, September 2 and reopen on Tuesday, September 3 at 10 a.m.

Cypress Park Pool will be closed on Monday, September 2 and remain closed until 2025 season.

All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed on Monday, September 2 for the Labor Day Holiday. Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk Libraries will reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3 while the Chuckatuck Library will reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 9.

The Suffolk Visitor Center will be open on Monday, September 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will be closed until further notice for major repairs.

The Suffolk Executive Airport terminal will be unmanned on Monday, September 2. The airfield, self-service fuel island, and restaurant will remain open on Monday, September 2.

Virginia Beach

Williamsburg

The City of Williamsburg will observe Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024. All City offices will be closed. This includes the offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street, and Quarterpath Recreation Center. Waller Mill Park will follow normal operating hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Garbage will be collected on its regular schedule Monday and Tuesday. Recycling collection will be delayed by one day; Monday recycling collection is rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Tuesday recycling collection is rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Need to pay a City bill when offices are closed? A convenient 24-hour bill payment drop box is located at the front of the Municipal Building, 401 Lafayette St., for City transactions. Payments can also be made online. Drop box payments made on Monday, Sept. 2 will not be posted until Tuesday, Sept. 3.
