SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — A Gloucester woman has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run in Smithfield that sent a 14-year-old boy to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened on Saturday, Nov. 4 around 12:30 a.m. Troopers said the boy was walking a motorbike when he was hit by a car on 17032 Benn’s Church Blvd. and the driver fled the scene.
Virginia State Police enlisted the help of the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office and Suffolk Police to locate the vehicle involved in this hit-and-run.
An investigation revealed a 2019 Nissan Rogue with Virginia registration matched vehicle evidence that had been left at the scene. Investigators determined the vehicle was registered to 31-year-old Chanice Lynnette Atkinson.
After trying unsuccessfully to locate the vehicle, state police contacted Newport News Police and Hampton Police to assist in locating Atkinson and the vehicle.
On Nov. 5, state police found Atkinson and the vehicle, which had extensive front end damage, in Gloucester County.
On Nov. 6, with the consultation of the Commonwealth Attorney, Atkinson was arrested on a charge of felony hit-and-run. Atkinson was taken to Western Tidewater Jail, where she received a $3,500 unsecured bond.
Authorities say the teen was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital. The child’s grandmother told 10 On Your Side that he was then transferred to CHKD in Norfolk.
The boy’s father declined an interview, saying the situation was too fresh. However, he said his son’s condition is unfortunately not looking good. He told 10 On Your Side his son has a long list of injuries, including a broken nose, bruised lungs, broken ankles and more.
This is still an active criminal investigation. State Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or may have information about the crash to call state police at #77 or 804-750-8788. Emails can also be sent to questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
